The Importance of Gutter Capacity

Gutter systems are like roofing materials – they’re all made differently from a variety of materials offering varying levels of protection for homeowners. Some gutter systems are available in vinyl, aluminum, copper, and so on. Along with the material they’re constructed of, gutter systems also differ in their design and capacity.

There are many gutter installation companies and brands that offer different gutter systems whether you choose to install a k-style half-round gutter system or gutter guards. Each offers its protection and can handle a certain amount of water that can be flushed through the entire system at once, also known as the capacity.

We’re going to compare the capacity of several different gutter systems so you can know what to expect if you’re in the market for a new gutter system. Keep reading to learn more about gutter capacity and how the K-Guard System compares to others.

Half-round Gutter Systems

Open-top gutter systems (also known as half-round gutters) are very common in homes throughout the country due to their relatively low cost. While they’re affordable, they don’t offer the protection that gutter guards or K-Guard does. Because the inside of the gutter is completely exposed, debris like leaves, twigs, and pests can easily enter the gutter system and form clogs. They also don’t have as high of a capacity for water to be flushed throughout the system at a rapid pace.

Gutters in a half-round gutter system are often smaller ranging in size from 4 to 6 inches. They don’t move as much water throughout the system when compared to other gutter systems and styles since the top is completely exposed and not covered to allow more water to flow through.

Gutter Screens/Filters

You guessed it – gutter screens and filters don’t add any extra capacity to the half-round gutter systems they’re installed on. Some homeowners choose to install gutter screens and filters themselves to offer some protection against debris and clogs, however, they don’t add to the capacity of the gutter system.

Gutter screens and filters may take away from the capacity of the gutter system if tiny seeds and granules get trapped in the screen or filter or if tiny trees or weeds sprout from the screens and filters. Gutter screens and filters act as a shelf and collect seeds and granules – add in some water and dirt and trees and weeds can sprout from the screen and filter, impeding water flow and lessening the capacity of the gutters.

Other “Complete” Systems

Other companies offer “complete” systems, however, their gutter capacity differs from K-Guard’s.  Most other “complete” systems offer 4 ⅝” or less capacity which doesn’t allow as much water to flow through the system at a rapid pace.

K-Guard

The gutter capacity of the K-Guard System is unlike any other. Our gutter product has many components that work together to offer the highest capacity. Our gutters and downspouts are larger than others and can support a minimum of 23 inches of rain per hour! Our higher capacity troughs increase the flow rate and allow water to flow away from the home at a more rapid pace.

Not only are our gutters and downspouts oversized to offer the highest capacity but our gutter system eliminates clogs forever, meaning you’ll never have to worry about cleaning out the gutters again. No chance for clogs means the gutter capacity will stay at 23 inches of rain per hour, guaranteed.

The K-Guard Leaf Free Gutter System is also extremely durable. Constructed of high-quality aluminum, our gutter system can withstand all types of weather conditions including snow and ice that we experience often here in Colorado. The K-Guard System is so durable that we offer three-lifetime warranties including a lifetime no-clog, lifetime no pull-away, and a lifetime paint warranty! Gutter capacity is extremely important, especially living in Colorado where we often experience winter storms that bring many inches of precipitation that will eventually melt and move through the gutter system. You’ll want to choose a gutter system that can offer extreme protection from drainage issues while allowing the highest amount of water to flow through the system as possible.
