Tips to Get your Home Ready for Summer

Can you believe that the first official day of summer is just days away? Summertime is one of the best seasons – we are able to enjoy hot days and warm evenings outside, not to mention road trips and barbecues with friends and family. Nothing feels quite as refreshing as the arrival of summer, and with it, a fresh start.

Of course, springtime and summertime are times for deep cleaning your home. We all feel a sudden urge to declutter, finally tackle that home project we have been meaning to do for quite some time and feel the need to deep clean both the inside and exterior of our homes.

But how exactly should you deep clean your home? Follow our tips below for how to thoroughly clean your home to get it ready for the next few months of warm weather!

Tip #1: Clean the Inside

If you are like most people then you complete a regular routine cleaning of your home, including sweeping, mopping, emptying the dishwasher, etc. To thoroughly clean the inside of your home this summer, ramp up your cleaning routine to include the following:

● Sweep under hard-to-reach places like beds and furniture
● Dust your entire home
● Disinfect and deep clean bathrooms
● Wash indoor rugs
● Disinfect countertops
● Deep clean your oven (both the surface and inside)

By following the deep cleaning routine above, your home is bound to feel squeaky clean. When your home is fresh and clean then you feel refreshed as well!

Tip #2: Prep the Outside

Our homes can look dingy after the long fall and winter seasons and need a facelift come springtime/summertime. Leaves collect in all sorts of places, flowers and plants can die or need trimming or need to be replaced, dirt can build up around your home’s exterior, etc. To bring the outside of your home to life again, follow these cleaning tips:
● Pressure wash the exterior of your home
● Pressure wash patios/decks
● Replace broken or torn screens
● Remove and replant plants and flowers that will not bloom again
● Sweep around entryways
● Prep your grill by cleaning it with a mild detergent and water
● Seed your lawn

Odds are you will be hosting some backyard barbecues this summer so you will want your home to look its best. A home exterior that is well taken care of attracts potential buyers and keeps neighbors happy. Not only will everyone on your block be impressed by your deep cleaning but you will appreciate your hard work too. A clean exterior is so refreshing leading into the summer months!

Tip #3: Clean/Replace Your Gutter System

While gutter systems could be grouped in the above outdoor prepping tips, they require a little more attention and cleaning than most every other part of your home’s exterior. Why? Because they can trap debris, mud and silt during the harsh fall and winter months we just endured. They can also be a hotspot for birds to nest which can cause a whole slew of problems if you do not clean them.

Summertime is monsoon season here in the Colorado region and you will want your gutters to be working their best to properly drain rainwater away from your home. Gutter systems should always be cleaned in spring/summer to prepare for the heavy rainfalls associated with monsoon season.

To begin cleaning your gutter system, we recommend starting with your gutters. Always make sure you wear heavy duty gloves to protect your hands from any sharp debris, insects, or nests you may encounter while cleaning. Along with gloves, you will need the following tools: a scoop, bucket, hose, and ladder. Start the deep cleaning process by removing all debris from your gutters and flushing them out with a hose to remove any buildup of rocks, leaves and dirt.

Next up are your downspouts. Downspouts can become clogged easily so cleaning them is crucial to ensure your entire gutter system works properly this summer. If it is clogged, try inserting a plumber’s snake into the corners where your gutter meets the downspout. You should be able to remove or dislodge debris that may be causing the clog. Finish by flushing out the downspouts with a garden hose to remove any other debris that may be built up.

If you have tried the gutter system cleaning process above and your gutters still are not working well to flush and drain water away from your home, then it is time to replace it. Summertime brings a lot of rain; according to the 2020 Old Farmers’ Almanac, we can expect plenty of thunderstorms and precipitation over the next couple of months. Therefore, you will need to be prepared with a new gutter system.
