5 Common Gutter Myths & Facts

The average homeowner learns about gutters when they either need to replace them or when they’re purchasing a home and selecting a gutter system. There’s a lot to learn about gutter systems and quite a few things homeowners should be aware of regardless of the condition of your current gutter system.

There are many misconceptions about gutter systems like how often they should be cleaned, how well they protect homes from drainage issues, etc. Today we’re going to discuss 5 common gutter myths & facts so you can get to know your gutter system a little better.

1. They Don’t Need to Be Cleaned Often

One of the myths we hear most often is that gutter systems don’t need to be cleaned often. If you have a half-round gutter system then this statement couldn’t be further from the truth! If you aren’t cleaning your gutter system regularly then your home is at risk of severe damage caused by clogged gutters. If you have gutter screens or filters then you’ll want to clean them to make sure they’re free of larger debris.

It’s recommended that you clean your half-round gutter system at least twice a year according to the National Center for Healthy Housing. Living in Colorado means your home is most likely surrounded by pine trees and pine needles that can cause half-round gutters to easily clog. We can’t stress the importance of cleaning your half-round gutter system enough!

2. Pests Don’t Live Inside of Gutters

When we think of gutter systems we probably think of a few leaves and some dirt that are carried into the gutter by way of wind and storms. Unfortunately, other things are creeping and crawling in your gutter system.

Gutters that aren’t cleaned often make for ideal ecosystems for many different organisms, including insects like mosquitoes and wasps. However, pests can also call your gutter system home. Squirrels, birds, and rodents are just some of the many critters that have been known to build nests inside gutter systems.

3. All Gutters Last a Lifetime

This is one of those myths that should never be misconstrued as a fact because it’s so far from the truth. The average traditional, half-round gutter system does not last a lifetime and will need to be replaced! Some gutter systems only last a few years while some last a couple of decades. Nothing lasts as long as the K-Guard Leaf Free Gutter System – more on that later.

4. They Withstand all Types of Weather Conditions

Many homeowners believe that their gutter system can withstand all types of weather conditions from heavy rain to blizzards and everything in between. While some systems may withstand a few years of the elements, some gutter systems will corrode and pull away from the home when exposed to precipitation and high wind gusts. Living in Colorado inevitably means extreme winter weather conditions and warm summers and both put a lot of stress on a gutter system.

Traditional half-round gutters, vinyl gutter systems, and other “complete” systems aren’t able to withstand all types of weather conditions and will warp, sag, and develop paint chips over time. K-Guard, however, can withstand all types of weather conditions. Again, more on that a little later.

5. All Gutter Systems are the Same

Just like no two people are the same, gutter systems differ from each other as well. There are several different types of gutter systems available on the market but each one varies when it comes to durability, lifespan, performance, and design.

Now that we’ve explained some common myths and facts about gutter systems, let’s focus on how K-Guard is different. For one, unlike traditional gutter systems, The K-Guard Clog Free Gutter System never needs to be cleaned. Our patented hood and rear drainage channel eliminate the possibility of debris entering the system, therefore there is no way it can become clogged. As a result, pests also aren’t able to enter the K-Guard Gutter System.

Next, K-Guard can withstand all extreme weather conditions including high winds and blizzards, and freezing rain which is crucial for homeowners in Colorado. K-Guard also does last a lifetime as opposed to other gutter systems that may corrode, sag, or pull away from the home as a result of extreme weather conditions. Our gutter system is so durable that it’ll never pull away from the home, corrode, or get chips in the paint.
